Volunteer Information

Girls Rock Columbia is looking for volunteers for summer camp and year round support!

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Teaching positions are open to female, trans, and nonbinary individuals.

Some, but not all, positions require musical experience.

Counselor

  • No music experience necessary.
  • Counselors will serve as mentors for assigned groups of girls.
  • This involves participating in games and skits, making sure campers are where they need to be at all times, accompanying them between classrooms and offering advice and help throughout the day.
  • Must be available Monday-Friday of camp week, 8:45am-6:00pm.

Instrument Instructor (Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Drum Kit, Keyboards)

  • Music experience necessary.
  • Instructors are responsible for working with other teachers to plan lessons, teaching and creating a supportive learning environment for the campers.
  • Must be available Monday-Friday of camp week, 9:00am-12pm.

Band Coach

  • Music experience necessary.
  • On the first day of camp the campers form bands – and that’s when your work begins!
  • The coaches provide help and guidance in all aspects of working as a collaborative creative team: setting up, tuning, songwriting, learning how to play together, figuring out stage moves, etc.
  • Must be available Monday-Friday of camp week, 2pm-5pm and at the showcase event.

Workshop Leader

  • No music experience necessary.
  • We need volunteers with expertise in an area relevant to the camps mission to develop and teach one-hour lessons to groups of campers divided by age throughout the week.
  • Workshops usually involve co-and/or team-teaching. Workshop topics can include songwriting, self-defense, media literacy, home recording etc.
  • Workshop leaders must submit a workshop proposal and be prepared to meet with a camp organizer to discuss curriculum before camp.
  • Must be available to teach 1 or 2 one-hour sessions on the day of your scheduled workshop (workshop dates and times TBA).

Roadie

  • No music experience necessary.
  • We need roadies to help set up, break down, and move equipment throughout the week.
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

Pick Up/Drop Off Aficionado 

  • No music experience necessary.
  • This role assists with the check-in and out of campers every day, monitors visitors, coordinates in-camp communication, gives directions, answers questions, and (possibly) sells showcase tickets.
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

The “Can-Do!” 

  • You’re a go-to!
  • This role will help out with vital last-minute needs, i.e. running to Kinko’s or the hardware store, fill in if another volunteer can’t make her shift, and generally lend a hand when a situation arises.
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

Food Team

  • Snacks are donated for the campers to enjoy twice daily.
  • You will pick up food donations, do supply runs and prepare food as needed.
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

Licensed Nurse

  • No music experience necessary.
  • We are in need of a licensed nurse on site all week – just in case!
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

Licensed Clinical Counselor

  • No music experience necessary.
  • Will work with campers in the occasion that campers have personal issues arise and will need to talk to someone and/or be referred to services elsewhere.
  • There is a lot of flexibility with this role!

Showcase Production Assistants

  • We need hands on deck to work merch and info tables, sell tickets, fold programs, and help to ensure that all aspects of the showcase concert run smoothly.
  • Must be available on the final Saturday of camp.
